Newspapers and Communication

The newspaper in the late 1800’s was very different. In 1874 the first newspaper was called the Sand Pump. Also in 1874 it was changed to the Review. In 1876 it was changed to the Millerstown Harold.

The newspaper only cost $1.00 a year. Now it costs over $100.00 per year. The post office address was Barnhart’s Mills Post Office. It advertised things like food, clothes, and jewelry. It also told readers about deaths and new arrivals.

The telegraph was the only way to reach people in 1861. In 1888 people in Chicora started to use the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Now everybody can use the phone.
