Millerstown Population
By Paul McGarrity and Mike McConnell
In Millerstown, in 1870, the population was two hundred seven. In 1880 it was 1,108 and in 1890 it was 1,162. The fuel for heating and lighting for all these people was brought in from local wells.
By 1890, hundreds of workers poured into Millerstown to mine the fuel needed, which meant the population and the businesses increased dramatically.
From 1861 to 1873 Millerstown was a small town dependent on the surrounding country for the success or its small business. The Pennsylvania telegraph office sent oily stories to people across the nation. Soon Millerstown was filled with 3,000 inhabitants and increased sometimes to 7,000 or 8,000.
